Productivity and Quality Improvements Programme for selected factories

Productivity and Quality improvement programme is vital to prepare the manufacture industrialists to sustain and meet the competitiveness in global market by increasing productivity.

It helps the industrialists to maximize the profit by reducing the cost of production. In considering these facts, Ministry of Industry and Commerce initiated general productivity programme as a pilot programme to improve productivity in ten factories in 2006. In 2008, it would be extended up to 20 factories and energy saving progrmme was included as an extra package for giving much contribution than the pilot programme. Some companies were withdrawal from this programme under the financial constraint. This programme begun to recuperate the financial difficulties of local industrialists chapter when the global financial crisis arisen. At that time, some companies were difficult to sustain from that situation. They maintained only operational activities. At the end, 12 factories remained and they were highly committed for succession of this programme. The five companies out of remaining 12 companies have shown best performance and there are Samson Sport wears (Pvt.) Ltd, Tea Tang (Pvt.) Ltd, Dhanusha Marine Lanka (Pvt.) Ltd, Orel MFG (Pvt.) Ltd and Union Chemical Lanka (Pvt.) Ltd. Some of these have applied for the national level productivity and Quality award competitions. It was completed by end of 2010.

Energy Efficiency Improvement Programme

Ministry intends to launch an energy efficiency improvement programme to reduce energy consumption by 10% - 15% of all industries and to reduce the burden on national energy system because of energy conservation is one of the national priorities as well as mitigation of local environmental pollution. In addition, specific problems as lack of awareness on the potential and inadequate in house technical expertise will be addressed through this project. Ministry is to be hired energy expertise consultant to identify the potential energy saving industrialists as to achieve the expected results of the programme. 15 Companies in industrial estates which have been established in Western and North Western Provinces will be selected as a model companies and they are keeping as a benchmark to improve other companies too. At the first phase, we are targeting to cover Kurunegala, Kaluthara and Colombo districts. At present, tender has been called for selecting a consultant.
